"Tight muscles can lead to undue strain on nearby joints during everyday activities or can risk injury themselves," said Sasha Cyrelson, D.P.T., clinical director at Professional Physical Therapy in Sicklerville, New Jersey. Cyrelson highlights that as we age, our muscles tend to become shorter and less elastic, underscoring the importance of actively preserving and improving muscle length to sustain our physical abilities without discomfort.

Standing Hamstring Stretch

  • Stand tall with feet hip-width apart and knees slightly bent, arms at your sides.
  • Exhale as you bend forward at the hips, lowering your head toward the floor while keeping neck and shoulders relaxed.
  • Wrap your arms around the backs of your legs and hold this position for 45 seconds to two minutes.
  • Bend your knees and roll up when finished.
